Patty?s industrial higiene & toxicology
Volume 2 of the 3rd edition of Patty's industrial hygiene and toxicology, also edited by the Claytons, will deal with toxicology and is to be in three parts. Volume 1 [Abstr. Hyg. 1980, 55, abstr. 25] had 27 chapters by different authors but Volume 2A has only 11 chapters. The first of these chapters, by J. A. ZAPP (p. 1467), is headed Industrial toxicology: retrospect and prospect; the other chapters deal with metals, organic sulphur compounds (but not carbon disulphide), phosphorus, selenium and tellurium, epoxy compounds, esters, aromatic nitro and amino compounds, ethers, phenols and phenolic compounds, aldehydes and acetals, and heterocyclic and miscellaneous nitrogen compounds.
Volume 3 of the new Patty was available in 1979 and deals with Theory and Rationale of Industrial Hygiene Practice. In this the problems involved in extrapolating animal lexicological data to human exposure in industry and the environment are discussed in 21 chapters [ibid. 1981, 56, abstr. 1221].
All these sections are bigger than in previous editions. One respect in which the second edition is better is that the contents are more detailed than in the third edition. With a book of this size a detailed contents list makes it easier to find particular subjects and understand the layout.
It is difficult to appraise a book which is only one-third of the whole because there may be deficiencies and repetitions in the final work. It is not easy to use, but will remain as a standard work in occupational health laboratories and offices in spite of the high cost. It is a big book but there is a need for work with a new approach to the subject of occupational toxicology. Interest in all aspects of toxicology is increasing on the part of administrators and laboratory workers so that this book remains essential in spite of many deficiencies. E. Boyland.
